About Martin Brundle

Former Formula One and sportscar driver Martin Brundle has firmly established himself as a leading F1 commentator on British TV and around the world. Here is a brief overview of the man and his life:

Childhood

Martin John Brundle was born on 1 June 1959 in King's Lynn, England, to John and Alma Brundle. He has lived within a five mile radius of the location all his life. During his time at school and college he gained 12 ‘O’ levels and a Diploma in business studies, passing with a distinction.

Family

Martin is married to Liz and they have a daughter, Charlie, and a son, Alex. Alex is following in his fathers footsteps as a racing driver, currently competing in Formula 2. Martin met his wife whilst studying at college in King's Lynn.

Martin explained how his family first became involved in the motor trade that would grow into a passion for motor racing:

"My parents were smallholders in Norfolk. One year, they sent their crop to London and the money never arrived. They lost everything, so my dad started to fix other farmers' tractors and motorbikes to make a bit of money. How I went from the marshlands around King's Lynn to sitting on the grid at Rio, I'll never know. Well, I do know. I got there because cars and engines were all I had..."

Martin's father would later own a car dealership that would subsequently grow into the Brundle Group of retail motor dealerships. He was also a rally driver in the 60s and 70s. Martin's brother, Robin, has previously competed in Touring Cars and took part in the 2006 Goodwood circuit revival event.

Motor Racing

His racing career began at the age of 12, when he competed in grass track racing. In 1975 he began Hot Rod short oval racing which supplied him with many wins and gave him a solid grounding for the cut and thrust of circuit racing which was to follow.

On turning 17 Martin passed his driving test and gained a circuit racing licence, allowing his professional racing career to take off. In 30 years he competed in saloon racing, Formula Ford 2000, BMW Championship, Formula Ford 2000, Formula 3, European Touring Car Championship, World Sportscar Championship, Le Mans 24 hours and Formula 1 for which he is best known.

Commentating

In 1997 Martin began commentating alongside the legendary Murray Walker for the UK coverage of Formula 1, with their commentary also broadcast in many English speaking nations around the world. Some would argue that his success as an F1 commentator has surpassed his accomplishments on the track, with his authoritative and engaging commentary earning him four prestigious Royal Television Society Awards and an army of fans.
