Welcome to Martin Brundle F1

Martin Brundle
Surveying the grid, Canada 2008

Martin Brundle is a former Formula One racing driver who has firmly established himself as a leading F1 commentator. His in-depth racing knowledge, authoritative commentating style, dry sense of humor and famous grid walks have made him a legend among British F1 fans.

Martin’s F1 racing career lasted twelve years and despite reaching the podium he never climbed the top step and won a Formula 1 Grand Prix. However, he competed in many types of motorsport becoming World Sportscar Champion in 1988 and winning the Le Mans 24 hour race in 1990.

He began commentating on Formula One races for British TV in 1997. Since then he has won respect as a F1 pundit, an army of fans and numerous awards for his commentary work.

What makes him a legend?

Martin’s pre-race ‘grid walk’ makes for fantastic viewing as he jostles his way around a busy F1 starting grid attempting to interview key team members, drivers and celebrities minutes before the race starts. It is live, unscripted and unpredictable. Anyone who is willing to appear on live television in front of millions of viewers and hopes to find someone to talk to is due some respect!

Some sports commentators are great at explaining what's going on, but an F1 race can be complicated due to the varying fuel, tyre and team strategies that are used. Martin excels in simply explaining not only what is happening on track, but what strategies are at work and how they are affecting the current race positions and what it will mean later in the race.

It has been a quite few years since Martin was a full time racer, but his broad experience allows him to give an in-depth insight into what a driver is feeling and how a racing car is driven. His dry wit also gives viewers some brilliantly funny comments and quotes.

Finally, his passion and respect for the sport shines through. He always gives sincere and forthright opinions, some of which have landed him in trouble! Martin explained it best himself when defending comments he made in a newspaper article…

“As a former Formula One driver, I have earnt the right to have an opinion about the sport, and probably know as much about it as anybody else. I have attended approaching 400 grand prix, 158 as a driver. I have spilt blood, broken bones, shed tears, generated tanker loads of sweat, tasted the champagne glories and plumbed the depths of misery. I have never been more passionate about F1 and will always share my opinions in an honest and open way, knowing readers will make up their own minds.”

That's why Martin Brundle is a complete and utter legend! (Now we just need to find him a good co-commentator).
